Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden (BEAUTIFUL) is a botanical
garden located on 380 acres of rolling meadows, woodlands and lakefront
property in Belmont, North Carolina. Founded by Daniel J. Stowe, a
retired textile executive from Belmont, it includes large manicured
gardens, natural surrounding areas, including a woodland trail,
sparkling fountains, and an Orchid Conservatory.
The appealing garden site has a long history of use by its
inhabitants. Originally, Native Americans of the Catawba and
Cherokee tribes trapped, fished, hunted and raised families here. Later,
the area served as home to early European settlers. In recent years, the
garden’s meadowlands have been used as pasture for farm animals,
although much of the site is covered by mature deciduous woodlands and
pine forest.

Don
Gibson Theater,
the
State Theatre, an Art Deco gem, opened its doors as the area's most
beautifully appointed movie house on October 27th, 1939. The local paper
immediately praised it as "one of the most strikingly beautiful building
fronts of the modern day" and prompted one patron to ask "Is this really
a Shelby playhouse?"
The State was a typically popular and romanticized small town movie
theatre, but in its later years (as The Flick) it encountered the same
challenges that befell literally thousands of such film houses. Retail
anchor stores moved to the malls along the highway... downtowns dried up
and sometimes blew away... cable TV became a more and more dominant
force in our lives... you know the story, you've seen it happen all over
the country.

But thanks to a dedicated team of passionate volunteers, a group called
Destination Cleveland County was formed just a few years ago and it's
thanks to them that this old movie house is coming back to life after
having been dark for almost three decades. In this effort the support
and faith and vision of the City of Shelby cannot be exaggerated. Sounds
like public relations puffery but in this case it's absolutely true.
Reborn as the Don Gibson Theatre, our 400 seat venue will act primarily
as a very intimate concert hall. We're going to bring you the best in
touring nationally known acts, musicians who've graced magazine covers,
who've earned Grammy Awards and Gold Albums and "Best of the Year"
Awards... people whose CD's (and albums) you may already have in your
collection. We'll also be very carefully selecting the newest
up-and-coming acts out of Nashville and New York and Austin, acts you
may not have heard of yet... but your musically attuned daughter or
brother has.
Jazz, Country, Blues, Comedy, Rock and Roll, Bluegrass, vintage film
series and everything in between. You'll see it all at the Don Gibson
Theatre.

Kings Mountain Battleground,
THE NUMBER ONE THING
TO DO WHEN
STAYING WITH US!
Thomas Jefferson called it "The turn
of the tide of success." The battle of Kings Mountain, fought
October 7th, 1780, was an important American victory during the
Revolutionary War. The
battle was the first major patriot victory to occur after the British
invasion of Charleston, SC in May 1780. The National Military Park preserves the
site of this important battle.
http://www.nps.gov/kimo/ Be sure to also ask about our all new
Battlefield Guide Service showcasing any of three battlefields -
Cowpens, Kings Mountain and Ramseur's Mill. Tours are done in your
vehicle with you driving and our guide in the front passenger seat.
Tours offered are 30, 60 and 90 minutes long. This is an
unforgettable experience and we also will ride inside of tour buses.
Kings Mountain is a unique battle for several reasons. It was
one of the few major battles of the war fought entirely between
Americans: no British troops served here. In the South, many
people were divided. When the war started, some fought for
independence, others for loyalty to England. We have two events each
year hosted by the City of Kings Mountain where we share with one
another (the Department of the Interior named the city as the Gateway to
the Parks). Our events include a parade, battle skirmish
reenactment of The Battle of King and fireworks on July 4th weekend,
Beach Blast Pirates Event on the third weekend of July
and a battle skirmish at the Annual Gateway Festival on the second
Saturday of October. See more at
www.thebattleofkingsmountain.com
With a 26 million dollar economic impact - you are in and around
PATRIOT country showcasing the battle of Camden, back country militia
action and the battle of Guilford Courthouse. Also enjoy our
living history campsite behind the mansion, while you are here!
Kings Mountain is also unique in that large numbers of riflemen
fought here. Rifles were not used much by the armies. A
rifle was a hunting weapon, used by families on the frontier and
developed exclusively by American ingenuity. The
American militia that fought here mainly used rifles; the Loyalist
troops had mostly muskets. The difference between a rifle and a
musket is accuracy. A rifle is slow to load, but very
accurate. Riflemen can hit a target at 200 or 300 yards. Yet
the rifle can only be fired once a minute. A musket, with a smooth
bore, is easy to load but inaccurate. Muskets have an accurate
range of about 100 yards, but can be fired up to three times a minute.
Cornwallis lost his entire left flank of his army here and this is THE
battle that turned the tide of the war, broke the stalemate and sent
Cornwallis to a quick and speedy defeat in less than a year. Here
is the battle where it all happened - why America is here today.

Dear Marti,
Thank you so
much for everything. I know I am breaking my rule of sending thank
you notes (lol) but I wanted to just touch base and say thank you
again. Honestly I had not one complaint - all good. I do
like nice things and you
certainly went above and beyond. We
look forward to coming back up next week for the dinner. I
know we cannot do it a lot but I will make every effort to come
every other month if possible for a stay. I just like nice
things and truthfully on the way home, Chuck said, well he finally
redeemed himself after 22 years of marriage (lol lol). He has
ordered super nice things that have come dead or spoiled (lol lol),
or gone to restaurants or inns and had horrible things (lol) so this
was so great not one complaint. Anyway, we really enjoyed our
selves and it was so nice to meet you and Stormy. It was really a
lot of fun for us to go to the steak and hoagie place. So
again, I thank you and thank JT AGAIN AND Stormy for their kindness
as well. JT is a super nice kid and it is great you are
teaching him such a valuable skill and how to be a good business
man. We really enjoyed breakfast and it was super nice treat for
us, so take care and see you soon!

WOW!
U.S. National Whitewater Center is a non-profit outdoor
recreation facility for whitewater rafting, canoeing and kayaking which
opened for public fee-based use on November 4th, 2006. The Center
is located on 307 acres of land adjacent to the Catawba River, near the
intersection of Hawfield Road and Moores Chapel Road in Mecklenburg
County, North Carolina (just outside of Charlotte).

The creators of the Center were inspired by the Penrith Whitewater
Stadium built for the 2000 Olympics. The Center's primary feature
is the world's largest
and most complex recirculating artificial whitewater river.
The river was designed by three-time Olympian Scott
Shipley.
USA Canoe/Kayak, the National Governing Body for nine canoe and kayak
racing sports, moved its headquarters to the nearby city of Charlotte in
2003. In 2007, the USNWC became an official Olympic Training
Site for whitewater slalom racing.
The park contains over 12 million gallons of water. The whitewater
portion of the river has a total of 4,000 feet of channel divided among
the three courses. These channels contain Class II to IV rapids
that can be navigated via canoe, kayak or a guided raft. River
access to the Catawba provides for flatwater paddling. A 110-foot
conveyor lifts boats, complete with paddlers, from the bottom back to
the Upper Pond in 60 seconds in a manner similar to a T-bar lift or a
rope tow for skiers.
In addition to the whitewater courses, there are numerous land
facilities including about 11 miles of wooded trails for mountain
biking, hiking and trail running, a high ropes course, an elaborate
climbing wall with numerous routes, a stage for live entertainment and
special events. www.usnwc.org

Our first stay at the Inn of the Patriots was probably the best B
and B visit we've experienced. The accommodations were great - we stayed
in the Cleaveland room - and the service provided by Marti and Stormy
was excellent.
They made us feel like the most special guests and Marti prepared
an excellent dinner for us as well. His talent as a chef is obvious and
the friendliness and hospitality they extended was superb. Marti is an
extremely interesting man with wonderful experiences to share in his
culinary tour and that history combined with the local history of the
area make the inn experience a unique one. Service and excellence is
definitely their priority and we highly recommend the Inn of the
Patriots!
